Q1. Jim, take us back to 1994. What was it about that bubble show in Utica that changed the direction of your life?
In 1994, a friend of mine from church invited me to bubble show in Utica, New York. I had never heard of one or what it would be, but it was truly fun to watch the bubbleman jubble with the bubbles, make them spin inside a bubble and much more! That experience sparked a journey that I never could have predicted and became the starting point of my life’s work. It was an apiphany for me.
Q2. You often use the word “bubblology.” What does that mean to you?
“Bubblology” is my way of describing the art and science of bubbles combined. It’s not just making bubbles—it’s understanding how they work, why they behave the way they do, and how they can be used to teach, inspire curiosity, and bring people together. I have a scientist friend who is a true bubblologist, meaning he examines bubbles, invents with them and can explain how bubbles work. He's taught me a lot. His name is Thomas Altman from Oswego NY.
Q3. When did you realize this was more than a hobby?
When I first started dabbling with bubbles, making wands, finding a good bubble formula, I had no idea this could be an occupation. To try out a "performance" I contacted the Utica Children's Museum and described the entertainment. All they asked, "Does it have any music in the show?" Indeed it did and they gladly accepted me. From that day people started contacting me for parties. In the first three years of performing the shows tripled in frequency. I was blown away and having a great time. So the added revenue was nice. As I continued performing and learning, it became clear that bubbles could be a powerful educational and creative tool because a teacher inquired about a show to introduce their students to read more. Over time, what began as inspiration grew into a full career, allowing me to reach audiences across the East Coast and into
Q4. You hold a world record for the tallest outdoor bubble. What does that achievement represent to you?
The 30-foot outdoor bubble record reflects commitment to the craft. It’s the result of patience, experimentation, and a deep understanding of bubble science. More than the record itself, it represents how far curiosity and dedication can take you. Canada. It's an unofficial record at the moment, and according to the internet no one else has done this. Thirty feet is high! It also sites capability and respect for a bubble performer. Some venues use it to promote the act.
Q5. Your shows are branded as “Welcome to Bubblopolis!” What is Bubblopolis?
Bubblopolis is an imaginative space where learning and fun meet. It’s a place where audiences of all ages—children, students, and families—can explore bubbles through science, creativity, and wonder. The metropolis of Bubblopolis is full of imagination for children and entire families. The premier show enabled me to create bubble characters that "talk" and "teach" on all kinds of topics such as reading, science, the gospel, and how bubbles bring tons of joy. In Bubblopolis there is the Mayor ROY G BIV. Right there, in his name, we begin to teach on colors that bend, refract, reflect as the sun shines on and through a bubble. The Mayor introduces his Bubble Citizens throughout the show: Big Brother, Lil' Sister, Big Boy Bartholomew, Butterscotch Bob, Baker Bob, and more. Each character draws the audience's attention to whatever topic we're teaching. Bubblopolis helps children to learn while having fun! [Sometimes they don't know they're learning LOL]
Q6. You perform everywhere from birthday parties to schools and libraries. How do you reach such a wide audience?
Bubbles are universal. Whether it’s a birthday party or a school assembly, the combination of visual excitement and hands-on learning naturally connects with people of all ages. We've walked in parades behind the Governor of NY, the Mayor of Syracuse and along with musicians. The best part of reaching a customer is through word of mouth and indeed there has been a lot of that!
Q7. Many people comment on your patience and ability to connect with children with disabilities. Why does that matter to you?
Creating an inclusive experience is essential. Every child deserves to feel seen, welcomed, and capable of participating. Patience and adaptability allow the shows to truly reach everyone. I have a nephew with Cerebral Palsy and Autism and his life experience taught me no matter what barriers to communication there are bubbles can perform the miracle of stirring joy and then a relationship between me and the child. As for patience, what really happens is the looking into a child's eyes and seeing their soul, their innocence and creative desires to learn. A child needs time to absorb and so I love to wait and watch and engage slowly as they take further steps in learning and trusting.
Q8. What makes your work different from other bubble performers or products people might find online?
While there are fictional characters and bubble toys with similar names, “Mega Bubble Man” refers to a real person and a real mission—using bubbles as a vehicle for education, inclusion, and joy, not just novelty. There is only one other Mega Bubble Man that I know of in Russia. And that's great for him. I always say, "The more bubble fun the better!" My friend Thomas Altman describes me as a storyteller rather than a bubble performer even though I use bubbles as the medium. Another friend from Canada said the the same thing of me. Story telling is such a powerful means of attracting an audience of many or one and then combine that with bubbles, small and super bodacious, you've got a unique presentation. Having a degree in Education from SUNY Oswego in Industrial Arts & Technology, I've utilized that training to create an environment of learning, creativity and fun.
Q9. How has Mega Bubble Man Productions grown over the years?
The business has grown alongside the shows, expanding into educational programming, event performances, and interactive experiences. Today, people can explore show options, learn the science behind bubbles, and connect through the website and social platforms. We have three part time bubble assistants, each with their own skills. Our youngest is 13 years old and oldest is? It doesn't matter their age because bubbles keep us all young!
Q10. What do you hope families and educators take away from your performances?
I hope they leave with a sense of wonder, curiosity, and joy—and the reminder that learning can be playful and inspiring. I watch for families that spend more time than most in the Mega Bubble Playground and offer them a free wand and free Mega Bubble Concentrate so they can take it home and keep the joy prospering! The excitement is awesome!
Q12. What does the name “Mega Bubble Man” mean to you now?
It represents a lifelong dedication to the art and science of bubbles and shows how a niche interest, when pursued with passion, can grow into something meaningful and impactful. When I first saw "Professor Suds" in Utica, NY I was filled with purpose due to a spiritual encounter that was whispered in my ear, "You can do something with this." That comment perplexed and grabbed me so I started to experiment. For two years I searched out a formula, how to make my own wands, then the idea of Bubblopolis came to be, then the characters. Music from a movie, "Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension" brought a bouncy flavor to the show and thus bubble choreography was invented. When friends introduce me to their friends they always say, "This is the Mega Bubble Man!" We all laugh together! I love the identity it's given me because it spurs on love and joy and creativity and curiosity.
Many thanks to all those who have enjoyed our shows, our Mega Bubble Playground and educational/inspirational events.
